The people the Duke has thought worth writing down — the singular, the difficult and the improbably gifted, each with a portrait, a date and a line saying why.
Not a hall of fame — a fair number are scoundrels.

What it is
A standing register, not a list of favourites. It holds the people the Duke keeps returning to — and a fair number he would cross the road to avoid.
Every entry carries a portrait, the years, the field they worked in and one line on why they are here. The portraits are real photographs wherever a free one exists, and where none does the Duke has made one — those are marked, so a made picture is never passed off as a photograph.
It grows. Names arrive in batches, each checked against the register before it goes in.
Nobody of that name is in the register.
Portraits come from Wikimedia Commons and remain the work of the photographers named beside them. Ninety-two of the register have no portrait we are free to publish; they stand in type instead.
